Travel Info
Flights
Pisa is the nearest airport to the Garfagnana area of Tuscany. Most of the accommodation is around a 1 hour 30 min drive from the airport.
There are flights most days with Ryanair from Glasgow Prestwick, on Saturdays from Edinburgh to Pisa with Jet2 and London Stanstead to Pisa on a variety of airlines. Easyjet connects from Aberdeen, Glasgow and Edinburgh to Stanstead. Other cheap options include flights to Genoa (3hrs drive), Milan Bergamo (4 hrs drive), Bologna (3 hrs drive). Chartered flights are available in the summer months direct from Glasgow to Pisa. We can recommend an excellent travel agent who specialises in flights to Italy. There are a number of English airports who also provide direct flights to Pisa including Newcastle, Leeds/Bradford, Liverpool, Manchester, Bournemouth and of course London Stanstead and Gatwick.
Car hire and train travel
This is the latest information on car hire options that we have recently researched. We have been in contact with several clearing agencies to determine the best deals possible for our customers. The main clearing agencies are Holiday Autos, Car Hire 4 Less and AutoEurope. They are mainly Internet based, although you can also book by telephone. These agencies deal with Hertz, Avis and Europecar who all operate from Pisa Airport, at considerably reduced prices.
Autoeurope have very competitive rates without the add-ons other companies have. Uniquely they operate an Excess Refund option on many of their rentals, which in our experience is well worth taking. Discounted hires are available if you click on the link above and opposite.
We try to ensure that our customers get the best possible service and benefit from our local knowledge and experience of travelling in the area. Feedback is always welcome and any useful experiences you have, we try to pass on to fellow travellers.
Taxis / trains
Some people like to travel by train from Pisa Airport to the Garfagnana area. Train Italia has timetables from Pisa via Lucca to Castelnuovo di Garfagnana. It takes around 1 hour 30 minutes from the airport station which is conveniently right outside the airport terminal building. Tickets can be bought at the airport or in other train stations. Train travel is very easy, cheap and efficient as well as a relaxing way to see the scenery.
You can either use local taxis (we can give you an English speaking driver number) or hire a car at Castelnuovo town. The local Tourist Information Office can arrange local car hire in Castelnuovo by the day or week.
